Desire to Receive

רצון לקבל Ratzon Lekabel

The desire to receive is the basic wanting that every person is made of; in Kabbalah it is the raw material of the Vessel, and the goal is to transform it, not suppress it.

The desire to receive (ratzon lekabel, רצון לקבל) is Kabbalah’s name for the basic wanting that drives every person: for pleasure, safety, love, meaning, more. In the teaching of Rabbi Yehuda Ashlag, it is the very substance of creation, and the stuff the vessel is made of.

Desire isn’t the problem

Unlike some spiritual paths, Kabbalah doesn’t ask you to kill your desires. You can’t receive anything without wanting it. The first step in the guide is getting clear on what you actually want, because vague wanting makes a vague vessel.

The shift

The problem is desire that only takes, “the desire to receive for oneself alone,” which leads to comparison, fear and the constant feeling of not enough. Kabbalah’s work is to transform it into a desire to receive in order to share: wanting more so that you can give more. That shift is what makes the vessel stable.

In daily life

Notice the difference between “I want the money so I’m finally safe” and “I want the money so I can build something and take care of people.” Both are desire. The second one holds.
